Moving Oversized Loads Through Calgary’s Truck Route Network
Calgary is one of the more paperwork-heavy cities in Alberta to move an oversized load through, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a move that runs on schedule and one that stalls at a staging yard. A permit is required once a load-hauling vehicle exceeds 2.6 metres wide, 4.15 metres high measured from the road surface to the top of the load, or 22.86 metres long (bumper to end of load). Single-trip and daily permits are issued through the Government of Alberta’s TRAVIS system, and applications can take up to four business days to review. Every move is also governed by the city’s own bylaws (Traffic Bylaw 26M96, Truck Route Bylaw 60M90, and, where applicable, Dangerous Goods Routes Bylaw 13M2004) which constrain which corridors a load can legally travel.
Two thresholds catch people out. Coordinated moves above 5.3 metres high or 7.32 metres wide need a minimum of two weeks’ notice. And if the route passes a transmission line that has to be de-energized for safe passage, the utility requires a minimum of seven weeks’ notice. We scope all of this during lift planning, and, for clients running a high volume of loads inside city limits, we will look at whether an annual city-wide permit makes more sense than repeat single-trip applications.
