How Temperature Affects Crane Operation

Crane Safety, Mobile Cranes | Jul 15 / 21

When it comes to mobile crane operation, rigging and lifting processes are rarely simple and straightforward. As most construction sites are completely outdoors, weather conditions and temperature can further complicate the rigging and lifting process. Weather delays and hazards can delay or drastically slow the pace of any project, so it is important to know how to handle harsh conditions and temperatures. As leading providers of mobile cranes, the team at TNT Crane & Rigging understands how temperature affects crane operation. That is why we have provided some information on the potential hazards of extreme heat or severe cold and how to handle them.

Learn about operating a mobile crane in severe weather.

Extreme Heat

Extreme heat can cause multiple hazards for equipment and personnel alike. One of the major hazards posed by extreme heat is the risk of dehydration and heat stroke for operators. Mobile crane cabs can become exceptionally hot and uncomfortable, so all personnel should be instructed to stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded/covered areas whenever needed. Another major risk is increased strain on cranes and other equipment. Seals and O-rings in particular are susceptible to damage in extreme heat as they can be deformed due to direct sunlight. Mobile cranes can also overheat if driven too hard, so it is important to maintain a safe pace even if it is a bit slower.

Severe Cold

When temperatures drop below 0°C, construction sites can become dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Extremely cold weather can negatively impact the precision, accuracy, and strength of mobile cranes. Hydraulics, rigging devices, and hoists can all be compromised in severe cold, reducing their rated capacity. When operating in temperatures below 0°C, the maximum rated load of a crane should be reduced by 25% to ensure optimal safety during operation. It is also worth letting equipment run for a few minutes before operation to help dislodge any potential ice and help prevent build up.
